Pretos Novos
A visually striking Art Direction project for the theatrical performance Pretos Novos.
Pretos Novos is a theatrical performance presented at Teatro Correio Léa Garcia in Rio de Janeiro, featuring artists Blu Oliveira and Vitor Feitosa from the Giramundo collective.
The production explores the history of Black people in Brazil, weaving Yoruba mythology, ancestral memory, and non-linear time into a powerful artistic narrative.
The Challenge
The creative challenge was to visually translate a story built on ancestry, cyclic temporality, and the transformation of the Pretos Novos into a symbol of strength and cultural continuity. The production demanded a visual identity that honored its spiritual and historical depth.
The core problem to solve was:
How do we design a Key Visual that represents a non-linear cycle of time, evokes Afro-Brazilian ancestry, and still feels contemporary and universal?
My Role — Art Direction & Visual Design
As Art Director and Visual Designer, I developed a unique Key Visual built from a powerful portrait captured by photographer João Marcelo (@joaomarceloresende).
My goal was to create an aesthetic that felt both timeless and forward-moving. I crafted a composition that symbolically represents circularity, transformation, and an ancestral energy that expands beyond the stage itself.
The final artwork became the foundation for the entire communications system. It was adapted for digital and printed formats and showcased across multiple touchpoints:
. A large outdoor poster placed at the theater entrance
. Indoor signage within the venue
. Digital urban media across the neighborhood
. Social media and online promotional assets
The result was a cohesive and striking visual identity that amplified the narrative power of the performance and positioned the show with the emotional weight it deserved.
